From TT Director I received seven compositions (No 5 was offered in two versions) in anonymous form.
According to the theme definition (see above) there must be at least two masked black thematic lines each being opened and doubly closed in different variations of the solution. Hence, the lack of a line opening in the post-key play could not be compensated by refuting some try, like:
- 1.Bf2? e4! – in No 5A (Kc1-Kb4) and No 5B (Ka8-Kb4)
- 1.a7? Sa~! and 1.c7? cxb4! – in No 6 (Kh4-Kh8)
When a masking piece alone disable threat directly by arriving onto a particular square, like:
- 1...Sc5 3...Sxe4 – in No 3 (Kh7-Kf5)
- 1...Bc3 2...Bf6 – in No 6 (Kh4-Kh8)
the opening is formal and the corresponding line therefore not thematic.
Since No 6 has not a single thematic line, and No 3, No 5A, No 5B have only one, all three compositions are excluded from the award.

1st Prize - No 7, Solaiappan Manikumar & Narayanan C. G. S. (India) 2R3bq/K1p2pn1/2P1pB2/2N2pQn/1PP2p2/1B1R2p1/1pPN4/k7

1.Bc3! – 2.Sd~ – 3.Rd1#
1...Sf6 2.Sa4 ~ 3.Bxb2#
1...Se8 2.Ra8 – 3.Kb~#, 2...Sd6 3.Kb8#
1...Bh7 2.Qh4 – 3.Qh1#, 2...g2 3.Qe1#
1.Ra8? – 2.Kb~#, 1...Bh7!
1.Qh4? – 2.Qh1#, 1...Sxf6!
1.Be5? f6!
1.Bd4? e5!
1.Rf3? – 2.Rf1#, 1...g2!
1.Re3? – 2.Re1, 1...fxe3!
1.Qxh5? – 2.Qd1#, 1...Sxh5!
1.Qxf4? – 2.Qf1#, 1...g2 2.Qxc7 ~ 3.Qa5#, 1...Sxf4!
This good example of the cyclic valve has officers as masking pieces; though being inserted to obstruct them four black pawns conveniently refute tries, as well. A better key would be welcome, but hardly expected in the position strung up to the edge of legality.

2nd Prize - No 4, Sergey Khachaturov (Russia) 8/p2NN3/PpP5/1K2Pp2/2Pk2p1/B1RBprrp/1P2Pp1q/5nbb

1.Bd6! - 2.Sf8 ~ 3.Se6# (2.с7? Rf4!, 2.е6? Rg2!)
1...Rg2 2.c7 - 3.Sc6# (a), 2...Qxe5+ 3.Bxe5# (b)
1...Rf4 2.e6 - 3.Be5# (b), 2...Bxc6+ 3.Sxc6# (a), 2...Re4 3.Sxf5#
White pawns and black rooks are dueling in this compact reciprocal bivalve. Pseudo-Le Grand can be discerned in the moves 2 and 3.

Honorable mention - No 2, Yury Gorbatenko (Russia) N4RBK/2p3pp/P1k2B2/5p1r/1PpRb3/P1Np2n1/1n5b/4r2q

1.Rdd8! - 2.b5+ Kc5 3.Bd4#/Be7#
1...Se2 2.Bf7 ~ 3.Be8#
1...Bd5 2.Bd4 ~ 3.b5#
1...f4 2.Rf7 ~ 3.Rxc7#
In another cyclic example the extra mate 3.Bd4# serves instead of obstructive pawns to force arrivals onto thematic lines: 1...Se2 prevents it directly and 1...Bd5 by intersection. Still, the latter is thematically impure for allowing flight to d4 as another defense after 3.Be7+.

Commendation - No 1, Yury Gorbatenko (Russia) 7b/8/1P1pp3/K1Ppp1Q1/Npk5/3RP3/2P5/7b

1.Qg8? d4!
1.Qd8? e4!
1.Qe7! - 2.Sb2+ Kxc5 3.Qc7#
1...d4 2.Qxd6 ~ 3.Sb2#
1...e4 2.cxd6 ~ 3.Qc7#, 2...d4 3.Qxe6#, 2...Bd4 3.Rxd4#
Defense 1…d4 is not pure because of its double motive, line opening and flight giving.
