For this tourney from the tourney director Aleksey Oganesjan I received a total number of 125 problems, of which 2 problems also had versions. I consider the tourney to be very good, owing to the contribution by the participants, particularly the authors of the honoured problems. I sincerely thank all the composers who contributed for the pleasure of judging this tourney.
The theme for this tourney is not new, as it has been known for many years and by now many problems have been composed. Setting this theme for the tourney had an aim of discovering new possibilities allowed by the stipulation and the authors succeeded to the largest extent.
In certain solutions of some problems a white piece does not participate, which I treat as a serious flaw. While regarding some of non-honoured problems, I believe that they will be published in another tourneys and win certain or higher distinctions than those which I might have awarded. I did not rank those problems which show the stipulated theme in a simple way.
Capturing a white pawn by the black first move was the most common motif in this tourney. Unfortunately, this is the most used motif in problems published so far, hence this was a reason for ranking these problems lower in the award or not ranking them at all.
While ranking the problems I was guided by their originality, synchronization of the play, the position and the use of material. For some of the honoured problems the anticipation control has shown that no anticipation exists, but a final word about this issue belongs to those who will take a look at the award and check the honoured problems.
I excluded following problems in view of anticipations:
- No 1 (Kh2-Kc2) – yacpdb/379911. No 1 was initially planned for inclusion in the award as the most successful rendering of a record achievement. But yacpdb/379911 is more successful;
- No 16 (Kh4-Kd4) – yacpdb/376318;
- No 19 (Kd1-Kf4) – pdb/P1095950. The problem initially was marked by 3rd HM but it excluded due to strong and more successful anticipation;
- No 18 (Ka4-Kf4) – yacpdb/379916;
- No 39 (Kc8-Ke4) – yacpdb/377468;
- No 96 (Kb2-Kd8) – yacpdb/379919;
- No 101 (Ka8-Kc4) – yacpdb/379921.
Besides that, the distinction of the problem No 46 (Kh6-Kc4), which initially was marked by 1st HM, was changed to a special HM due to partial anticipation pdb/P0571544.
